• About Magnetic Fluid
  Magnetic fluid is a colloidal liquid consisting of nano-sized magnetic particles distributed through a liquid body. As the name suggests, magnetic fluid is attracted to magnetic bodies.
  Magnetic fluid was originally developed in 1965 by S. S. Papell from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) as a rocket fuel propulsion technology for weightless environments. Subsequent modifications and enhancements have seen magnetic fluids adopted in a wide range of applications from the everyday to the cutting-edge.
• Structure of Magnetic Fluid
  Magnetic fluid consists of three components:
  (1) magnetic particles, (2) surfactant and (3) a base liquid.
  The performance of a magnetic fluid seal is largely dependent on the properties of the magnetic fluid. Without surfactant, the very small magnetite (Fe3O4) particles (approximately 0.01micro m) tend to separate and settle and do not remain evenly mixed with the base liquid. The surfactant envelops the magnetic particles and causes them to oppose one another within the base liquid. This prevents settlement and maintains a uniform distribution of particles.

• The original application for purge is to avoid emission of gasoline vapor out of the gasoline tank. Nowadays this vapor is captured by a carbon canister.
• The function of the valve is to control the purge flow which discharges the carbon canister content.
• The valve gets installed in the engine compartment. As a solenoid valve it is closed when the engine is turned off.
• The functionality of the canister purge valve is controlled by the engine control unit according to the current engine load, and the driving signal is based on pulse wide modulation with variation of the duty cycle.

• Face type seals used on large engine mainshafts are similar in construction to conventional our compact mechanical seals, but have additional characteristics to handle the surface speeds, temperatures and pressure typically required of such applications.
• The carbon seal ring stator is housed into a metal carrier and is spring loaded against the mating ring by a series of coil springs.
• Due to the temperature requirements, elastomers are not used. Instead, the secondary seal is one or two piston rings comprised of metal carbon graphite, or Teflon jacketed spring seal.
