Principle of Operation
A heat pipe is a sealed cylindrical container that has been evacuated (vacuumed) and filled with a small amount of liquid. When one end of the heat pipe is heated, the liquid inside the cylinder turns into vapor and moves to the other end. When cooled at the other end, the vapor turns back into liquid, and returns to the evaporating section due to the action of gravity. In this manner, the working fluid continuously circulates within a single pipe, and heat is transferred from one end to the other with a low temperature difference.
Characteristics of Heat Pipes
The characteristic diagram shows the results of measuring the temperature at the other end when one end (50 mm) of a heat pipe with an outer diameter of 14 mm and a length of 200 mm was placed in hot water ranging from 25°C to 90°C room temperature. For comparison, the results of an experiment conducted on a copper rod of the same shape under nearly identical conditions are also shown. It can be seen from this that the temperature at the other end of the heat pipe rises rapidly, and its temperature time constant is more than one order of magnitude smaller compared to the copper rod.
