Types of storage battery for energy storage

There are various storage batteries for energy storage, and each battery has distinct features.

Applications

Load leveling/ peak shaving:

The energy storage system stores cheap night-time power and discharges it during the day for peak-shaving. This strategy allows you to reduce contract power demand and shave peaks during the daytime power peak period.

Stand-alone operation function:

The energy storage battery supplies power to the load. Compared to diesel or gas turbine emergency generators, this function ensures a rapid startup (under 2 seconds) and discharges no soot or smoke.

Dynamic voltage compensation (DVC) function by UPS:

It protects the load facilities on the power network against instantaneous voltage drops (power outages). Because the system equips the energy storage battery with a large capacity, it provides a longer power interruption backup than a normal UPS (5 to 30 minutes).

Grid stabilization:

The system charges and discharges the storage battery to mitigate grid voltage and frequency fluctuations. It can supply both reactive and active power.

Load fluctuation suppression:

The system charges and discharges the storage battery to mitigate sudden fluctuations in the local load. It can supply both reactive and active power. Furthermore, combining the system with a private power generator reduces the load’s starting current, thereby expanding the generator’s autonomous operation capacity.

Utilization of regenerative power:

The system prevents reverse power flow by absorbing (charging) the regenerative power that occurs when the electric motor decelerates. In addition, the system discharges this absorbed electric power when the electric motor accelerates, which saves energy.
