What is Cantab?
The cantab measures the amount of chloride in the pasted water in concrete. Based on the Mohr method of chlorine analysis, we introduce the method of Dry Chemistry, which has made significant progress in the field of clinical chemistry, to perform a salinity meter in fresh concrete that is easy to operate without compromising accuracy.

Measurement of fresh concrete and mortar
Example of salinity measurement results for standard and low-concentration products using the same fresh concrete
Usage
- (1)
Collect the fresh concrete of the sample in an appropriate container. - A sample of about 1 liter is sufficient, but please collect a representative part of the concrete to be measured in accordance with JIS A1115 (Test collection method for concrete that has not yet hardened). You can also use concrete packed in formwork for strength testing.

Insert three cantabs into the collected sample (about 1/3 of the total length) so that they do not fall over, and wait until the moisture indicator changes to dark blue. (About 10 minutes) - [Note 1]
Since the cantab is unstable to direct sunlight and moisture, tear the aluminum pack and take it out immediately before measurement, and be sure to avoid direct sunlight when measuring. - [Note 2]
If the vent part of the cantab comes into contact with water, the moisture indicator will discolor and the end point will not be known, so please do not get it wet. - (3)
After confirming that the moisture indicator of the cantab has changed from orange to dark blue, take it out of the sample, Read the vertex of the part where the color of the capillary part has changed from brown to white (pale yellow) in a mountain pattern to about 0.1. - ● Measurement time is about 10 minutes.
However, it depends on the measurement temperature, concrete composition, chloride content, etc., and the time may be slightly longer. (Measurement is completed when the center of the moisture indicator turns dark blue.) You don’t have to wait for the entire moisture indicator to turn dark blue. ) - ● If chloride is not present, there will be no change in white (pale yellow).
But even without salt, a dark brownish (blackish discoloration) discoloration can occur. This is not a discoloration due to salt, so please do not make a mistake. - (4)
Using the attached conversion table from the reading of the cantab, the concentration of Cl ions for water in fresh concrete is determined for each of the three bottles. Using the average value, the chloride content in concrete is calculated using the following formula. - The value measured by Cantab is the concentration (%) of Cl ions relative to water (kneaded water) in fresh concrete.

How to store
Points to note when recording and saving the cantab after the measurement is completed
If you want to paste the completed measurement on a recording paper or save it, perform the following process.
- Wrap the cantab in tissue paper or a paper cloth, etc., and use a pen butt such as a pencil or ballpoint pen on a desk or hard object. Squeeze out the liquid that has been sucked up from the top of the scale toward the liquid suction port.
- Attach it to the report or construction record book with sellotape, etc., and store it so that it is not exposed to light (sunlight or fluorescent lamps).
- Do not store in an airtight container such as an aluminum pack or plastic bag.
[Note]
- If the sample is not squeezed out sufficiently, some discoloration will progress over time.
- After the measurement is completed, the reagent gradually changes color, and up to about 3 on the scale, a combination of impurities such as gray color, brown, and yellow appears. Please note that this is not a tarnish due to salt.
