In the propeller shaft system, the crankshaft, intermediate shaft, propeller shaft, and propeller rotate as one unit, creating a large potential difference between the propeller and the outer hull. This difference causes sparks between the shaft and bearing, leading to electrical corrosion of the bearing and crankshaft journal. The propeller shaft earthing device prevents this phenomenon, called spark erosion, by earthing the propeller shaft to the hull.
