A strainer is a vital protective device installed upstream in piping to remove iron filings, rust, debris, and other foreign matter. It protects downstream equipment such as control valves and traps.
Y-type strainers are designed to be compact, highly efficient, and cost-effective, and are mainly used with self-operated control valves, pressure-reducing valves, and traps.

Note: There is little difference in performance for strainers with 40 mesh compared to those within the 20–100 mesh range.
Conditions for Selection
Select a strainer with the same nominal diameter as the piping.
If frequent cleaning due to heavy debris is required, use a U-type strainer (see page 235) that allows debris removal from the top.
