Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger

The ultimate in efficiency, this heat exchanger utilizes heat pipes. We offer a lineup including side-mounting types and ceiling-mounting types.

Features

  • The efficiency of heat transport is extremely high (hundreds to a thousand times that of heat conduction), allowing the heat exchanger itself to be smaller in size.
  • No power other than the fan required to enhance heat transport efficiency is necessary.
  • Since there are no mechanical parts, failures are completely eliminated. The container for the heat transport element is made of copper, resulting in high corrosion resistance, allowing the heat pipe section to be used almost semi-permanently under normal conditions.
  • Since it is not a refrigerating machine, no condensation occurs.
  • The working fluid does not use CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), so it does not harm the environment.

Operating Principle

A heat pipe is a cylindrical container that has been evacuated (vacuum-sealed) and filled with a small amount of liquid. When one end of the heat pipe is heated, the liquid inside the cylinder turns into vapor and travels to the other end. When cooled at the other end, the vapor turns back into liquid and returns to the evaporation section by gravity. In this way, the working fluid constantly circulates within a single pipe, and heat is transferred from one end to the other with a low temperature difference.

Characteristics of Heat Pipes

The characteristic chart shows the result of measuring the temperature at the other end of a heat pipe with an outer diameter of 14mm and length of 200mm, when one 50mm section was immersed in hot water at 90°C (room temperature 25 °C). For comparison, the results of an experiment conducted under approximately the same conditions using a copper bar of the same shape are also shown. This reveals that the temperature at the other end of the heat pipe rises rapidly, and its temperature time constant is more than one order of magnitude smaller compared to the copper bar.
