Overview

The Aegis® Shaft Voltage Tester is a 100MHz digital oscilloscope, factory preset with optimal settings for measuring shaft voltage in rotating machinery.

Applications

• Measure shaft voltage that causes bearing damage and lubrication degradation, such as electrical discharge machining (EDM)
• Measure the voltage between the rotating shaft and the motor or machine housing

Various causes lead to potential differences (voltage) between the bearings supporting rotating machinery, with particular concern arising from motors controlled by inverters.

Bearings have an oil film; when the voltage rises beyond tolerance, discharges occur, causing electric currents. This can lead to the melting of bearing steel, an increase in iron particle concentration in bearing grease, and carbonization of grease due to discharge heat, resulting in blackened grease. It’s essential to confirm that it’s not just the detrimental effects of current flow known as “bearing currents” (Ridge marks) but also grease degradation.

The Aegis® Shaft Voltage Tester can easily measure the voltage between the rotating shaft and the frame (housing).
