Features

  • Steam-using equipment that takes time to start up
  • When residual steam condenses and causes a vacuum in the piping line
  • When you want to prevent freezing caused by residual condensate

Operation

The AK45 steam drain valve automatically discharges steam and condensate from the system during plant startup until the pressure in the steam system reaches the preset steam pressure (opening pressure) of the AK45.
If the steam pressure in the system is higher than the opening pressure, the AK45 remains open. Then, as the steam pressure drops to the closing pressure (which is lower than the opening pressure), the AK45 closes.
In other words, this drain valve is controlled by pressure only and does not respond to temperature.
Since it is equipped with a manual purging knob, the valve can also be manually opened to force purging during system pressurization or when removing deposits around the valve seat.

Example of Use

The startup of a steam line as shown in Figure 1 is a good example.
At the beginning of plant operation, steam has already condensed, but the pressure inside the steam line is initially zero.
Because there is no pressure difference yet to lift the condensate, the condensate generated cannot be discharged.
The AK45 steam drain valve ensures reliable automatic condensate discharge by remaining fully open while the pressure is low.
When the pressure in the steam line reaches approximately 80 kPa, the AK45 allows free discharge of condensate.
Once the steam system stops, the pressure in the steam line gradually decreases.
When it drops below approximately 80 kPa, the AK45 opens again to discharge any remaining steam and condensate, preventing the formation of vacuum inside the steam line.
This also prevents residual condensate from freezing in outdoor piping lines.
