The shading coil type embeds a copper ring in its fixed iron core, and it actively suppresses the attraction-force pulsation caused by alternating current. In addition, it follows the same principle as the flywheel diode type with a commutator, which further reduces attraction-force pulsation. Consequently, this design improves stability during operation.

The shading coil type offers several advantages. It delivers good response, provides a simple structure, and requires no wiring polarity. It also supports multiple functional features, making it appealing for a wide range of applications. Furthermore, its straightforward construction enhances ease of use.

However, the shading coil type also presents disadvantages that can reduce reliability. Burning damage may occur under certain conditions. A humming noise may also be generated during operation. In some cases, the shading coil itself may slip out, which can lead to performance issues. These drawbacks collectively limit long-term dependability.
